Table Setting: an 8 by 8 grid of very large letters with six words to find: bowl, cup, fork, napkin, plate, spoon

The six puzzles

  • Table Setting: plate, bowl, spoon, fork, cup, napkin
  • Living Room: sofa, chair, lamp, rug, clock, book
  • Clean Laundry: shirt, socks, towel, sheet, soap, basket
  • Garden Visitors: bee, snail, frog, bird, robin, worm
  • Sandwich Lunch: bread, cheese, tomato, butter, ham, pickle
  • Sandy Shore: sand, shell, wave, boat, pier, gull

What makes them easier

  • Small grid: 8 x 8 letters, about a third of a standard word search.
  • Very large letters: 40-point in the grid, 28-point in the word list, with a box to tick for each word found.
  • Only across and down: no diagonal or backwards words, the parts most people find frustrating.
  • Familiar words: plates and cups, a sofa and a lamp, a robin in the garden, a ham sandwich.
  • One puzzle per page, so you can print just one, or the whole set for a group.

Questions

What makes these word searches easy?

Each puzzle has a small 8 x 8 grid, only six short words (three to six letters) and one everyday theme. Words run only across or straight down: nothing diagonal, nothing backwards. The grid letters are 40-point and the word list 28-point, so most people can read them without glasses hunting.

Are they suitable for someone living with dementia?

We made them for anyone who finds ordinary word searches too busy, and many families and activity staff look for puzzles like these for a parent or resident with memory loss. Everyone is different: try one puzzle together and see how it goes. These are simple puzzles for an enjoyable half hour, not a treatment or therapy.

How can I help someone do the puzzle?

Sit together, read the theme and the words aloud, and look for one word at a time. Pointing to the first letter of a row is a good hint. A thick marker or highlighter is easier to use than a pencil. There is no need to finish: a found word or two is a good result, and the theme often starts a conversation.

Can I print them for a care home, day center or activity group?

Yes. Print as many copies as you need for yourself, your family, a class, a care home or any group. Please don't sell or repost the file; share a link to this page instead.

What paper size is the PDF?

US Letter (8.5 x 11 in), 13 pages: a how-to page, six puzzles with one per page, and the solutions. It also prints well on A4: choose "Fit to page" in your print settings.
